 | EPIRBs, PLBs and SARTs An EPIRB transmits a coded signal on a special frequency used for distress purposes. Picked up by a network of satellites that can locate the approximate position of the EPIRB, they are relaid to a rescue co-ordination center. Every EPIRB must be registered with the yachts national coast guard authority so that as soon as they receive a distress signal they will be able to identify who the vessel is, its approximate location, and who its shore based contacts are. |
